Outage, December 28, 2007
Sorry about this outage that lasted several hours.
It was not a real outage, mind you; simply our connectivity provider received a complaint for IRC abuse and due to my own slow response time (it's the Holidays!) they pulled the plug.
We're back up!

FAQ: The new Links Ads
So, here they are. Some find them benign, some find them annoying.
They have been up for two days. You know what I'm talking about: these subtle green links that offer more advertiser-oriented content if you click them.
Here is a FAQ that I will keep revising as new questions arise.
Q: How do my users unsubscribe if they wish to stop seeing these links?
After clicking an ad's question mark, you will be taken to a page where it is fairly simple to unsubscribe.
Q: That sounds easy. What's the catch? Do you put spyware on my PC when I unsubscribe?
Not at all. What IntelliTxt does is store a cookie in your browser, that tells their server not to bother you.
Q: Will we be able to change the links' color?
I am discussing this with the IntelliTxt people. I did not realized that most customization is actually in their hands rather than mine. Not a big deal but I would like to be able to offer you more flexibility.
Q: You said these ads would make my board faster! I am not seeing any speed improvement...
You are correct. I said that thanks to these ads we could make Clic!Dev faster. This is no magic formula: first we must run these ads, then if they prove a viable source of revenue, then I will be able to scale up Clic!Dev's technical infrastructure thanks to this revenue stream.

IntelliTxt ads = Better speed?
All-
I am aware that Clic!Dev, even optimized as it is, can get slow. And this is frustrating to your users.
I am currently looking at additional sources of revenue, that would allow us to get more servers and thus make your boards more zippy.
I was contacted by the IntelliTxt folks a few months ago but have been thinking about it until now. And I am now thinking that making C!D faster for a few link-ads seems like a great trade-off.
Here is an example of a IntelliTxt-enabled web page: www.realitywired.com/2007/11/04/the-future-of-cubeville-introducing-the-scooterdesk/
Can you spot the ad?
Note that your users will be allowed to opt off from seeing these ads via a link provided in the ad itself..
What do you think?

Social network: Step #1
Please, take a look at this: www.clicdev.com?do=test
Let me know if you like it or not, what you would like to see, etc.

|
08/08/07: beware of the cleanup bot!
Heads up: I am finalizing a new type of robot, that will crawl all the C!D boards and delete spam messages as well as the accounts of their authors.
Therefore, if you have board members that have a typically 'spammy' style, you may wish to let me know about them beforehand so that I can exclude them from the sweep.
FYI, topics containing certain 'hint phrases' will trigger the bot's fury. So, if your members are fans of 'Demi Moore' or are interested in 'Britney's tits', you may with to delete or rename their topics.

04/05/07: Unscheduled downtime
Well, it happens.
But what should not happen is how long is took to re-establish connectivity.
I have made some tweaks to our notification system, this should not happen again.

03/15/07: Scheduled Downtime Notice
On Thursday 15/07, Clic!Dev will be unavailable for a period of 15 minutes to up to one hour.
During this time, our network will be upgraded.
Thank you for your patience,
-Chris.

Level 3 Support this Week End: What happened?
Hi,
You may have noticed that no Level 3 support was available this week-end.
This is due to my being the only person who provides L3 support and my personal computer suffered a major crash.
But I'm back!

This morning (01/29/2007) downtime
All apologies about this.
Here is what happened:
We used to buy most of our domain names from ev1servers. Then, about 2 years ago, they discontinued this service but it was possible for existing customers who were "grandfathered in" to keep renewing domains using their control panel.
A few months ago, ev1servers and ThePlanet merged.
These last few days, two things happened:
1. clicdev.com's yearly "lease" was up
2. ev1servers registry service was transferred to TP
Because of this it took me longer than usual to retrieve my login credentials and in the meantime C!D's domain was put on customer hold.
I managed to log in to their control panel this morning and rectified the situation. Almost instantaneously, C!D was back up.
Ironically, this proved a very effective defense against Digg. Too soon? Sorry...

Need beta testers
It is now obvious from the new banner icons:
- After more than two years of absence, blogs are going to return to C!D
- You asked for it, we are debugging a new form of social networking for your board members.
With this in mind, it is obvious that we are going to need more beta testers.
Please contact me if you are interested in joining the beta of one of these two products, Do not forget to mention with product you wish to test!

Profiling JavaScript applications with Venkman
Found at the Thinkature blog:
Indeed, who remembers Venkman, the once-killer app for Javascript developers, now that FireBug does everything one can dream of?
Or does it? This post shows how good old Venkman still is the only one providing a crucial tool: profiling.
In a nutshell, 'profiling' is making sure that people do not leave your site in disgust because Javascript is making everything unbearably slow.
A must read!
